The Ten Commandments of Punch! Content

"When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy objects and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is to set out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them, so that they will not touch the holy objects and die." [Nu 4:15, NKJ]

I.
 Types of Content - Punch! programs come with an assortment of textures, 3D objects, plants and much more. Collectively, these items are called content, and with the advent of new custom features in the later versions of Punch!, the number of kinds of content has exploded. Individual kinds of content have grown with additions in fits a starts since the early versions, but lately, with the 8.0 versions and then 10.0, the amount of offered content has really expanded - to the point where content occupies more than 95% of the three CDs that AS3000-10 comes on.
 
As of AS3000-10 and AS4000-8, the amounts and quantities of content on the disk, where they are located on the installed Punch! and other facts are all collected together in the table at the end of this article.
II.
 Common Elements - All content is stored within the folder structure under the Punch! installation folder. This folder is set when Punch! is installed, and is, by default, "c:\Program Files\Punch! Name", where name is specific to the product. For example, the folder name for AS4000 is "Punch! Home Design - AS4000". Almost all content in Punch! is created, organized, manipulated and used by the Punch! main program, or by PowerTools executed within Punch!. In general there is usually a creation method for creating user content, and organizer for moving it around and categorizing it within Punch!, and various methods for using it in your designs. The organizers are all very much alike, and they enforce the rules that Punch! needs to effectively use content:
  • From the root of the content type there are two levels of categories, called "category" and "subcategory". These correspond to Windows folders within in the Punch! file tree.
  • Content categories, though they are Windows folders, must be created and manipulated with the appropriate organizer; failure to do so will result in your category nat being accessible from within Punch!, and the files in the category not being seen. This means you cannot simply create a new category folder with Windows and expect it to show up in Punch!, and that you should never use a Windows folder deletion in a content tree.
  • The folder where a particular content type is anchored must not be renamed or otherwise changed outside the organizer for that type.
  • Most content items occupy several files, all with the same name a differing extensions. A Punch! object, for example, is made up of three files. They will all be together in the content's category or subcategory folder. The filename (except for the extension) of custom content is usually supplied by the designer; this name may be related but need not be identical to the reference name, which is recorded in the Punch! .pro file for referencing the constant.
Content comes in two types: standard and custom. Standard content is delivered by Punch!, and meant to be used as is. For the most part is not possible to add, delete or organize standard content; it is designed to be used as Punch! supplies it. Custom content may be supplied by Punch!, but is designed to be added to by the user. Custom content has the constructors and organizers to facilitate those actions. Punch! will often supply some content in each custom category for use as live examples; it can be edited or deleted (though that is not recommended), or copied and edited (that's better), generally without hurting any other parts of Punch!.
III.
 Portability - Content portability (the ability to use content on other Punch! installations) is possible within certain limits. 3 objects have long been traded among Punch! users. Textures and plants, on the other hand, have not been so portable until late versions of Punch!. Some kinds of content are "carried along" with the project; 3 objects and custom doors and windows are incorporated right into the user's design file, and therefore show up in other installations automatically (providing the viewing installation is of a compatible Punch! version). Others, like textures and plants, are merely referenced in the file, and therefore have to be present not only on the designer's computer but the viewer's as well, and generally with exactly the same category and file names. This somewhat complicates portability, and must be taken into account when moving among machines.
 
If a custom texture is requested by the plan but not found in the place where it is expected, Punch! will substitute this most disagreeable texture shown on the right - a very good reminder, what?
IV.
 3D Objects - As alluded to above, objects are the oldest category of content that Punch! offers, and they differ from other content in a number of ways.
 
First of all, when they are used in Punch! the objects are actually copied from their original files into the .pro file. This makes the copies in a .pro file not subject to later changes to the objects themselves. Other content referenced by a .pro file has to exist in the same place it was when it was used in the design; if it is missing, the default texture is invoked. While object categories cannot be changed without using the Punch! organizer for the purpose, objects can be added right into the standard Punch! categories and they show up in the menus immediately. This cannot be done with textures, for example. Finally, 3D objects come in two slightly different versions. The older version was created and used in all Punch! versions from 1 through 7.5; the newer version is created by versions 8.0 and later. The difference is that the newer version may take advantage of custom textures. Newer versions of Punch! may incorporate either type of object into its plans. A problem arises when an older version of Punch! attempts to incorporate a new objects. Objects can be easily converted from old to new, but not the reverse.
V.
 Cross Usage of Content - Punch! has explicitly informed the user's forum that all Punch! content may be used across platforms, as long as the licensing between the two versions of Punch! are otherwise valid and not violated. You may use, for instance, the log cabin objects in AS3000 in Platinum 4.5, as long as you have validly licensed both those versions. Of course, any such usage is at the user's own risk; Punch! is not responsible if the results are not as expected. This is also emphatically not a license to use any Punch! content with any other program other than a Punch! product or for any other use than as an adjunct to the Punch! products.
VI.
 Uninstalling Punch! - If you are going to be uninstalling Punch! for any reason, you will want to save off your custom constant and other important files before you actually do the uninstall (Punch! uninstall shouldn't, and seems not to delete directories with user data in them, but I believe a belt and suspenders kind of caution is wise). So, you should save these folders (or at least their custom contents) within the Punch! main directory:
  • Objects (custom objects)
  • Textures\CUstom (modified textures)
  • Textures\CustomTextures (custom textures, fencing)
  • Textures\CustomPlants (custom plants)
  • Components (custom doors, windows, trim)
  • 2D Symbols (2D Symbols)
  • Embellishments (images)
  • Templates (if you reorganized your templates)
  • main Punch! folder (all the files with the extension .ini (all organizer data)
  • any files with the extensions:
    • .pro - except those in the Plans folder (your plans!)
    • .pto (terrain data)
    • .avi (Animator output)
    • .pfw (Fireplace wizard export)
    • .pcw (Cabinet Wizard export)
    • .pdd (Sectional Detailer export)
    • .pcc (Photoview Editor color export)
    • .pcm (Photoview Editor overlay mask image)
    • .sdo (Site Planner export)
    • .pap (Animator path export)
    • .xls, .iif (Estimator exports)
    • .pem (Plant Editor mask image)
Oh, and by the way, there is no reason that you must delete the older version of Punch! when you upgrade. It is often useful to have both available for a while at least. Multiple versions of Punch! can run (even at the same time) without interference.
