Updating ThistleKeep's Software

It is ThistleKeep's intention that these updates will remain available as long as ThistleKeep remains in business. If it does go out of business, it will donate them to an appropriate location where they will be available in perpetuity, as well as we can arrange that. Nevertheless, it would probably be a good idea to copy any updates (as well as the original PowerTool) to a CD-R disk for long-term safe-keeping.

In general, updating an old version of software will be a two step process. First, update the version from whatever version it currently is to the next major release (1.x to 2.0.0, for example; sometimes the major release may be something like 2.0.3). Then update the major release, whatever it is, to the current release, like from 4.0 to 5.1.3 (if that is the current release). Keep a copy of the two updaters you need to bring your original software up to the current version, just as you keep the original software safe for later re-installation.

The update module that is downloaded to you need only be double-clicked where ever it is on your hard disk or CD-ROM or other storage; it need not be copied to the hard disk. It will explain some things and ask for the name of the Punch! main folder (where you installed the Punch! version you are using; you can browse to it), and it will update your software. If you have trouble with it, the most likely cause is that something has corrupted one of the files of the existing version. Re-install the original software and try again. Make sure you are using the right updater for the software version on the disk. In the list of updaters below, "from 1.x" means that the updaters will update all versions of the target software at any version starting with "1.", like 1.0.0, 1.4.12, etc. After the update is successfully completed, you may delete the updater from the hard disk if you copied it there.

Special Instructions for MicroTool Updates:

MicroTools all require that PlansPlus be purchased and installed; further, the version of PlansPlus must be high enough to encompass the MicroTool name and version you are trying to install. All updates for PlansPlus, like all our updates, are free. To make sure you have a version of PlansPlus that is high enough to host your new MicroTool, start PlansPlus in Punch! and go to the Help->About dialog. It will contain a list of the MicroTools and their versions. If your MicroTool is not listed, or the version is less than the version you purchased, download the latest updater for PlansPlus and install it. Another check of the About dialog should now list the MicroTool, and after the MicroTool is installed, the checkbox indicating it has been detected should be checked.
